29.12.2015 - Watch out for Tax Scammers!

We’re into the last five weeks before the Tax Return filing deadline on 31st January so if you haven’t already filed your Return you need to act now. This next few weeks will also see increased activity from scammers trying to get personal information with scam emails purporting to be from HMRC very popular amongst the criminal fraternity. “HMRC” is one of the most scammed brands worldwide!

If you receive an email from HMRC asking you for personal information, bank details, tax payer reference or anything else do not reply as HMRC will NEVER ask for such information. Nor will genuine emails from HMRC suggest you have a refund, give any financial details, contain links to follow or have a personal email address for you to send your response. In short any email requiring a response will likely be a scam and if HMRC really have information for you it will be sent be letter to your home or be provided via your online account if you have registered to submit your Tax Return via the HMRC online service.

It might seem great to get an email informing you of a £2,182.45 tax refund but the old rule still stands – if it looks too good to be true – it is!

Take care with your internet security with HMRC and everyone else for that matter.

01.11.2015 - HMRC Investigation worries?

Did you know that HMRC have around 2,500 Compliance Officers to cover detailed enquiries and investigations into taxpayers affairs? Back in 2013 the Revenue were tasked with increasing the “tax-take” by £7 Billion per annum by tightening procedures and specific Tax Amnesties yielded significant results. The SME market is expected to contribute the most revenue increases and hence enquiries are on the rise.

19.09.2015 - Auto Enrolment picking up pace

The move towards Auto Enrolment pensions is now really gathering pace as smaller business owners are now having to set schemes in motion. Worryingly there are still many small business owners with staging dates in 2017 that have not started to organise. Remember you can set up a scheme now but need not start contributing until the deadline and it’s worth getting sorted to avoid the inevitable rush later.

Our advice is act now and get everything in place well before your staging date. Speak to your Independent Financial Advisor sooner rather than later!

14.02.2015 - How did you manage during "Tax Season"?

If you completed your own Self Assessment Tax Return running up to 31st January, how did you get on?

A recent “Which” survey suggests that 32% found the Return “difficult to complete” on the HMRC website with 38% commenting on “confusing jargon” and almost 40% seeking guidance from elsewhere in order to complete. “Which” even has a free calculator to make the calculations easier and it’s good but it can’t get over the fundamental problem that exists – Tax is complicated!

The move to Self Assessment some years ago might leave you thinking that tax is easy and completing your Self Assessment will be straightforward but it is not. There are many rules and regulations that determine the underlying calculations for the figures that will end up on your Tax Return and if you get them wrong you may end up paying more than you should! Alternatively you may not pay enough and end up with interest and penalties later when HMRC pick up the errors.

Getting a professional to complete the Return for you takes away the stress and gives you the added comfort that you have a professional fighting your corner with HMRC. The other thing to note is that it may not be expensive as you think – call for a quote.
